Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin emphasized the need for web developers to balance the needs of Web3 newcomers and decentralized application (dApp) veterans.
Speaking at the BaseCamp summit on August 1st, Buterin highlighted Ethereum’s transition from small-scale applications to those potentially serving tens of millions. He stressed the importance of user-friendly applications while preserving the core values of decentralization.
Buterin acknowledged Ethereum’s ecosystem shift from layer one to layer two and called on developers to cater to users of all skill levels without relying on centralized infrastructure. He emphasized the creation of solutions that serve both beginners and advanced users, facilitating smooth transitions between skill levels.
Buterin also recognized the role of centralized financial companies like Coinbase in onboarding new users into the crypto space, questioning how millions of coin holders can engage beyond simple ownership.

The young billionaire highlighted the need to improve cross-chain operability to reduce friction in asset transfers and access to dApps across multiple layer two networks. He mentioned ERC-3370 and ERC-7683 as promising upgrades to simplify transfers between chains and called for research to enhance layer two operability.
Additionally, Buterin discussed the significance of decentralization in layer two architectures. He outlined a progression from decentralization at stage zero where state roots are centrally provided, to stage one involving a security council overseeing the provision of state roots, and stage two imposing delays on contract upgrades and state root changes only in case of errors.
