Sony plans to resume the operation of the Whalefin cryptocurrency exchange, which was acquired from the cryptocurrency lending institution Amber Group last year.

The announcement was first shared by 吳區塊鏈 and later detailed by The Block.

On Monday, Whalefin released a statement that its parent company, Amber Japan, will be rebranded as S.BLOX. The statement also reveals that Quetta Web, a subsidiary of Sony, acquired the company in August 2023. The financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

Amber Japan, originally known as DeCurret, was acquired by Amber Group, a crypto finance firm, in 2022. Sony plans to relaunch the cryptocurrency exchange soon with a new application, as announced in the press release.

With the new license, cryptocurrency companies are beginning to re-enter Hong Kong.

While Sony has previously explored Web3 through various investments and partnerships, this acquisition marks its significant entry into the crypto space. The company has collaborated with Astar Network for the Web3 incubation program and filed a patent for transferring NFTs in various games and consoles.

Last year, Bloomberg reported that Hong Kong-based Amber Group intended to sell its Japanese division due to strict regulations in the country.
